It’s apple-harvest season in Washington. We love this time of year. Plenty of fresh picks in the fall, and we’re not just talking about the orchard. As our fans in the area will tell you, the cuisine is all about what’s local and seasonal. So we’re sharing a delicious menu built around the state’s beloved shiny fruit, plus a few “lesser-known” delights.
All you need is one apple, a few other ingredients and you’ve got a simple, easy to cook and serve meal. Apples are to Washington State what color is to Fresh Produce. So it’s no surprise that Washington supplies half of its red delicious crop around the world. Red delicious is one of the oldest apple varieties and dates back to the 1880s.
What’s your favorite type of apple?
The Pacific Northwest is bursting with fresh produce. The climate is ideal for growing; warm, dry summers and cool wet winters nurture a variety of fruits and veggies — even berries. Some of our favorites are marionberries, huckleberries and Hood strawberries. In the vegetable category, we’re especially fond of fiddleheads, seabeans, squash and pumpkins…. and so many others.
This hazelnut gem has a warm nutty flavor and a crunchy shell — the perfect finish to your taste-filled excursion along the coast. Hazelnuts, also known as Filberts are produced right here in the apple capital of the world, walnuts too.
