Giving Back is the Best Birthday Present

A birthday is a wonderful time to reflect on the past year and look forward to the year ahead. As Fresh Produce gears up to celebrate our 33rd year, we took some time to let this sink in. What then bubbled up is two things:

(1) We adore our community of amazing women and want to show this. The more we spoke about the idea, a special theme continued to come up in conversation: LET’S GO GIRLS! We found it to be so inclusive, energetic, supportive, powerful, and fun – and so it became the power statement for our newest tee!

(2) We are so proud of our commitment to helping others, and the great partnerships we have built with several charitable organizations. Wanting to do more… we decided our LET’S GO GIRLS tees will support these charities. You can purchase the tees online or in a Fresh Produce store to benefit the following (local) organizations!

Los Angeles Regional Food Bank

The La Jolla and Palm Desert California stores are excited to support the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank. Since 1973, the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank has worked to mobilize resources in the community to alleviate hunger. $1 provides 4 meals, which adds up to food for 300,000 people every month and 55 million meals last year. Additionally, the Food Bank conducts hunger education and awareness campaigns and also advocates for public policies that alleviate hunger. This greatly impacts the 1 in 7 people living in Los Angeles county who experiences food insecurity.

Harry Chapin Food Bank

Tees sold in our Florida stores (Orlando, Sarasota, Key West, Fort Lauderdale, Boca Grande, Estero, Saint Augustine, Delray, and Naples) benefit The Harry Chapin Food Bank, which provides food for more than 28,000 individuals each week. Last year, the food bank distributed 20.6 million pounds of food, provided 17 million meals, and turned every $1 into $8 worth of food for those in need. Since 1983, the organization has worked tirelessly to fight hunger and feed hope. As the only Feeding America food bank in Southwest Florida, the organization partners with more than 150 agencies that provide direct services to those in need, including church food pantries, soup kitchens, emergency shelters, and disaster relief agencies.

Sanibel Sea School

Our Sanibel, Florida store will donate a portion of proceeds to this amazing local program. The vision of the school is a world where all people value, understand and care for the ocean. Their mission is to improve the ocean’s future one person at a time. The school is dedicated to vibrantly teaching children and adults about marine ecosystems. This shouldn’t be called education. It’s about seeing, smelling, discovering, feeling and finally, because it’s time – learning. This kind of learning changes people’s lives. It also serves a variety of local organizations, teaching underprivileged and at-risk children and teens; some who live within twenty miles of the ocean and have never seen it.

Lowcountry Food Bank

Charleston, South Carolina is the site of our newest Fresh Produce store. Party goers who purchase the LET’S GO GIRLS tee will support the food bank, founded in 1983 with the mission to lead the fight against hunger in their community. The organization is a member of Feeding America and is committed to educating the public about the problems and solutions to domestic hunger as well as advocating on behalf of neighbors who experience hunger. The food bank serves the 10 coastal counties of South Carolina and distributes more than 25 million pounds of food each year (including 6 million pounds of fresh produce). Recipients consist of 200,000 families, children, seniors, soup kitchens, homeless shelters, and emergency food pantries.

Growing Gardens

The hometown Boulder Fresh Produce store will be contributing to this Boulder-based non-profit organization established in 1998. Growing Gardens’ mission is to enrich the lives of their community through sustainable urban agriculture. Growing Gardens envisions people experiencing a direct and deep connection with plants, the land and each other. Through its many gardening-based programs, Growing Gardens strives to reach gardeners and would-be gardeners of all ages to work alongside the organization and build community through urban agriculture.

Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona

Changes lives in the communities served by feeding the hungry today, and building a healthy, hunger-free tomorrow. The food bank responds to the root causes of hunger and seeks to restore dignity, health, opportunity and hope to people living in poverty. They believe that access to safe, sufficient, nutritious food is a basic human right. Since 1975 the organization has grown to 7 locations that help the 5 counties of southern Arizona, distributes 65,000 meals daily, and serves 190,000 people every year.

A portion of proceeds from tees sold online will also benefit The Harry Chapin Food Bank. We are so happy to make this powerful statement and help these incredible organizations as part of the Fresh Produce 33rd birthday celebration!
