Fresh Produce: From the Beginning

As we gear up to celebrate our birthday tomorrow, we are also thinking about the past 33 years and can’t stop smiling… it’s been quite the ride! It’s been a very nostalgic experience to go through old photographs and catalogs, and we want to share a few favorites with you. Hugs and thanks to you all for being part of the Fresh Produce story! Here we go…

Check out this catalog spread from 2010! We love that it shares a snippet of the Fresh Produce beginnings (what a place to start: the 1984 Olympics games!) as well as where the brand and founding family was 26 years later.

Here is Mary Ellen Vernon in their booth at the Olympic Games in Los Angeles. The t-shirts were a great success and Mary Ellen and Thom knew they were on to something… but they had no idea all that was in store with Fresh Produce!

In the beginning, there were many, many trade shows to share the Fresh Produce product. Thom and Mary Ellen have several wild stories about the travel and experiences. From the beginning, what made FP stand out in a crowd from the fun, fresh, and colorful designs.

Here are just a few product displays and design charts… are these considered “retro” now? It’s so amazing how the styles have changed and evolved over the years – while at the same time, always staying true to the FP brand!

A visit to the Fresh Produce stores is always a treat – we adore having you stop by! Here is a look at our Boulder storefront location back in the day, plus fun colorful store displays from different snapshots in time.

We love looking at the catalog shoots from over the years! The team has traveled to many beautiful locations, from the mountains to the beach (of course). It’s so much fun to see how art and photography have changed as well as the styles.

A fun fact: the first young Fresh Produce models are the adorable boys of Mary Ellen and Thom, and the three children of Mary Ellen’s twin sister, Jen. It’s especially nostalgic to see how these kids have grown over the years. Family is so important at Fresh Produce!

Meet the Vernon family! From left to right: Mary Ellen, Bub, Thom, and Scout. And here is their VW bus – which has been an unofficial mascot and fixture for the brand – appearing in catalogs, online, and several photoshoots over the years.

Another very special part of the story is Mary Ellen and her identical twin sister Jen, who has also been an important piece of the Fresh Produce puzzle since day one. You can also see friends and family modeling the line and Jen’s (then baby) daughter, Tyler, taking a nap at her first trade show. Family, friends, the team, and you, our customers, truly have made this the most special journey.
