Colorful Fall Tours

We love this time of year. The leaves do their dance of deepening hues. Sweaters inch forward inside our closets. The conditions are just right to hop in the car with a travel buddy and seek out spectacular scenery. That said, we thought you’d enjoy five of our favorite ways to explore the changing colors of fall.

All Aboard for Foliage

Freewheeling types will enjoy a scenic ride on the Hobo Railroad, departing from Lincoln, New Hampshire. No driving distractions, just the gentle hum of your rail car as it rocks past bold bursts of color. From the foothills of Mount Rainier staring up at snow-covered peaks to a leisurely excursion along the shores of Lake Superior, it’s a colorful view from your window seat.

The Sun-Filled Southwest

As you edge along the Enchanted Circle, Scenic Byway loop from Taos, New Mexico to Eagle Nest, feast your eyes on brilliant purple, golden and red cottonwoods. You’ve never seen anything like this. While the town of Taos displays its own light show of collectible art — stroll the walk-able streets for inspiring finds.

Golden Virginia Leaves

Drive anywhere around Williamsburg this time of year and you’ll catch the Virginia leaves in gold, pumpkin, and pomegranate. The James River keeps you company while you reflect on so many pretty palettes. While you’re visiting, you can brush up on your history. The Colonial Williamsburg® center is a revolutionary stop filled with wonder.

Soothing San Francisco

Now is the perfect time to visit the Bay Area. While there’s no hardwood forest ready to explode with color, the fall festivities are in full bloom. FallFest is one of the biggest outdoor parties, featuring a colorful cast of winemakers, mixologists, epicurean artisans and more. Mingle next to waterfront views under a warm, sun-drenched sky. It’s gorgeous.

New England Cranberry Harvest

There’s no shortage of Mother Nature’s charms up and down the New England coast, right? But beyond gold and crimson forests — there are cranberries! A cranberry harvest is bound to be the most fun you’ve had in awhile. A sea bursting with red emerges as harvesting kicks off.
