8 Tips for Surviving the Holidays

We’ve all had those holidays that were too hectic to even appreciate. What fun is that? Cooking and entertaining, holiday shopping, present wrapping, decorating—the list is endless. Soon, fun holiday activities turn into chores.  This year, learn to not only survive the holidays, but to enjoy them stress-free, too! Here’s how!

1. Set a Deadline

Procrastinating is not an option. Get as much done as you can before you-know-who comes to town, which includes shopping and wrapping. That way you can relax, spend more time with family and enjoy the holiday season. Hint: the last day to shop online for holiday delivery is Wednesday, December 18th.

2. Divvy the Dishes

Just because you’re hosting, doesn’t mean all dinner duties need to be on you. Offer to cook the ham or turkey and provide the cocktails. Ask your guests to bring the rest!

3. Shop Wisely

From crowded parking lots to lines out the door, holiday shopping can be an absolute nightmare. Avoid the roads, mall and stores all together by doing your holiday shopping online. You won’t even have to get out of your pajamas. If you have to shop in stores, bring a friend or two for company.

4. Get Some Sleep

Getting up to 8 to 9 hours a night of sleep is one key to living a healthy life. The holidays are no different.  Go ahead, get some rest!

5. Take the Day Off

If your work schedule allows it, take a day off the week before Christmas to finish up last minute shopping, wrapping or organizing.

6. Make Time for Yourself

A little “me time” never hurts this time of year. After all, you can’t expect to take care of others without taking care of yourself. Schedule a spa day ahead of time when you’ll know you’ll need it most. Make a mother-daughter day of it. If you can’t take the time for a massage or nail appointment, just stay home and spend an hour by yourself. Take a bath, watch your favorite Christmas movie or mediate. Celebrate the holidays by actually celebrating- believe us, you won’t regret it.

7. Embrace the Season

The holiday blues can set in very fast when you’re swamped with a never ending to-do list. If you remind yourself about what the holidays are really about, you’ll start to find your holiday spirit again. If you need a little inspiration, watch your favorite Christmas movie or bake Christmas cookies with the kids.

8. Just Say “No”

Although you might be tempted to say “yes” to every holiday party, consider turning a few invites down this year. Your time is precious, so make it count. Pick and choose what really matters to you most.
